I am really surprised that nobody calls GTA's series.. Mafia is from that type of games too, try them, if u pc can run them in enough quality.
Also i have to say about DOOM(2 and 3).. DOOM2 was my 1st shooter at all, and 1st shooter that i played at crappy school's pcs via lan. That was awesome!!! yea now its look like silly, but that time it was the best. Doom3 was my 1st shooter, that i played with 5.1 sound. Brrrrr really scared game, specially when u hear strange sounds behind of, then u turn back and ... yea ... usually there was some monsters that wanna beat(or kill) u
My brother like warcraft3, or more exactly its map called DoTA(defend of the a???tions ;P). there a lot of heroes(about 90-100 i think) with original skills, and a lot of power-ups(about 70-80 i think, but dk exactly), and he knows all of them.
